Apart from counter-insurgency missions, during which they have found many hauls of weapons and stockpiles of munitions, these dogs have also taken part in rescue operations. They are even taught to sniff out explosives in pressure cookers and cell-phones.
Says Major General Narayan Mohanty, D-G, RVC, "We're soon planning to form an elite unit that'll be a part of national disaster management. During calamities, they'll be flown to the places concerned within hours. Our success rate against militants shot up with the use of these dogs and now, virtually every counter-insurgency unit has these dogs, specially in the Valley and N-E."
There are plans to use them for anti-Naxal operations too. "Even paramilitary forces have been asking for these dogs," says Mohanty. "They are also sent for UN peacekeeping missions."
Mainly three breeds are used Labradors, Belgian Shepherds and German Shepherds.
